Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah and Adrian Sherwood first worked together on live shows with Prince Fari and Creation Rebel in late 1979. Bonjo a.k.a. Ras Binghi had come to England from Clarendon, Jamaica where he was raised in the hills in a rasta community. He studied as a percussionist from his childhood learning not only rasta drums but also African and Afro-Cuban rhythms. He loved to experiment, which was perfect for working with Sherwood. In 1981 inspired by Brian Eno’s “My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts” and an interview stating “I have a vision of a psychedelic Africa”, Bonjo and Sherwood produced the seminal “My Life In A Hole In The Ground”, the debut album from African Head Charge. Three more experimental albums soon followed – “Environmental Studies”, “Drastic Season” and the classic “Off The Beaten Track”.

It wasn’t until the latter part of the 1980’s that African Head Charge made its first appearance at ULU. The live band became legendary – with tours and performances at Glastonbury, Essential festivals winning great acclaim. 1991 saw the release of “Songs Of Praise” and 1993’s “In Pursuit Of Shashamane Land” both became classics with the remix album “Drums Of Defiance” issued in 1998.

In 1994 Bonjo left London to live in Ghana. The dream of every rastaman is to move back to Africa. Bonjo fulfilled the dream.

Due for release via On-U Sound at the end of May 2009 is the first album in over a decade. Regarded as the finest work “Vision Of A Psychedelic Africa” has been a long time in the coming.
