1 Giant Leap is a collaborative DVD/CD/Cinema project for the 21st Century, fusing
music, words, sounds, rhythms and images from around the globe to celebrate the creative diversity of musicians, storytellers, authors, filmmakers, artists and thinkers from many different cultures.

1 Giant Leap is a title, a philosophy, a leap of faith that sprung from the minds of
creative visionaries Jamie Catto and Duncan Bridgeman, and was supported by music
industry legend Chris Blackwell. It is a melding of 21st Century technology and age-old
beliefs; of careful planning and spontaneity; of East and West; rich and poor; the
embodiment of the unity in human diversity.

1 Giant Leap features contributions from some of the most creative minds of our
generation: Dennis Hopper, Kurt Vonnegut, Michael Stipe, Robbie Williams, Tom Robbins,
Speech (from Arrested Development), Brian Eno, Baaba Maal, Anita Roddick, Ram Dass,
Michael Franti, Gabrielle Roth, Asha Bhosle, and many others.

The primary theme of the project is “unity in diversity” – the assertion that regardless
of one’s circumstance and experience, our similarities vastly outweigh our differences.
1 Giant Leap explores simple but universal concepts that touch all of us, no matter
where we come from or where we are going. Chapters of the DVD correlate to tracks on
the CD, each examining a fundamental concept like sex, death, God, time or unity with
a powerful message of hope.

Adding to both the difficulty and joy of 1 Giant Leap were the logistics of amassing
music, words and images from over 20 countries; from towns and villages with no running
water to the most modern and technologically-forward cities. Catto and Bridgeman
journeyed around the world for over six months, with mobile studio and crew in tow,
compiling unique digital music and footage from evocative locales like Senegal, Ghana,
South Africa, Uganda, Kenya, Bombay, Bangalore, New Delhi, Varanasi, Calcutta,
Darjeeling, Sikkim, Bangkok, South East Asia, Australia, New Zealand, San Francisco,
Los Angeles and New York.

The result is a new collaborative genre of music and image, a visual time capsule of the
planet Earth at the turn of the 21st Century.

Jamie Catto
musician, film director, editor, photographer, creative catalyst

As founding member and art director of the hugely successful band Faithless, Catto has
enjoyed no fewer than five Top Ten singles (“Salva Mea”, “Insomnia”, “Reverence”),
seen two albums go gold in the UK alone, playing to crowds of up to 80,000. As art director for Faithless’ Cheeky label, Catto has directed critically acclaimed videos for their artists, including Faithless’ stunning sign language film for “God Is A DJ.” His photos and designshave adorned the covers of Skinny’s Failure And Faithless’ Sunday 8pm albums.

Duncan Bridgeman
artist, producer, multi-instrumentalist

Bridgeman’s music career started in the early 80’s when he scored a Number One dance hit (“Give Me”) with the groundbreaking soul band I Level. After leaving the band, he spent ten years as a successful producer and remixer, working with Duran Duran, Eurythmics, Shakespeare’s Sister and Paul McCartney. He enjoyed tremendous commercial success producing Transvision Vamp and, later, Take That’s first album Take That And Party. When Bridgeman tired of making other people’s music, he packed his bags, grew his hair long, and joined a band called Tribal Drift. He spent the next few years creating music and playing festivals throughout Europe and the UK, ultimately forming 1 Giant Leap with Jamie Catto.

Catto and Bridgeman travelled the world with a laptop and a digital camera. Everything you see and hear from 1 Giant Leap was collected and recorded using just these two pieces of equipment. The idea was to write a group of songs, put them into the laptop, and take them into the field. Because they were free from the constraints of the traditional recording studio, they could actually travel to the deserts of Australia or the jungles of Africa, and work there and then with whomever they met without the need for electricity. For the first time ever, rather than just gathering samples and taking them back to a studio and re-working them, the collaborators could hear what previous collaborators had done. This meant real collaboration and real involvement from everyone on the record. The singers in America could actually hear the musicians in India and the drummers in Africa, and really play along with them.

In 2009 a second DVD/CD was released "What About Me?" The new project stars Eckhart Tolle, Michael Stipe, Stephen Fry, Carlos Santana, Tim Robbins, Alanis Morrisette, Noam Chomsky, Maxi Jazz, Susan Sarandon, Lila Downs, Billy Connolly, Daniel Lanois, Stewart Copeland, Tom Robbins, Gabrielle Roth, KD Lang, Deepak Chopra, Zap Mama, Neale Donald Walsh, Michael Franti, Marianne Williamson, Frank Skinner, Speech, Bob Geldolf, Ram Dass, Will Young, DJ Swamp, Oumou Sangare, Yungchen Lhamo, Baaba Maal, Eddi Reader ... and many more. Full episodes are available to preview on the web-site.
