Liquid Stranger - The Intergalactic Slapstick PDF Print E-mail

Written by Igor Kauric

When I heard that the new Liquid Stranger's album is more dubstep than ever, I became a bit sceptic about liking it. Namely, I didn't like dubstep much. But when I had a first listen I got unbiased.

I wasn't sure if I'll publish this review here on ChillBase since this album doesn't actually offer much "chill" music. More likely, its upbeat feel would better suit the dance floors worldwide. Nevertheless, I had to share this one with you because it got me into dubstep. Maybe you'll face the same...

The Intergalactic Slapstick starts off with an intro track named "Hiding In The Morning Mist" which features Razza's voice as a story teller followed by beautiful ambient textures and atmospheres.

The following track is "His Fully Automatic Wheelbarrow" and it's one of my favourites on the album. A lovely dub tune with a pretty long warm up for incredible deep dub bassline and wicked percussions accompanied by mouth organ and occasionally guitars played by Seb Taylor.

Label: Interchill Records
Style: Dubstep, Tribal, Dub, Ambient
Released: Oct. 2009
Cat-No: ITC1CD037
Barcode: 5060147124866

The next track, called "Dance on the petals avoiding the nettles" and featuring accordions, jaw's harp and a dubstep beat, takes you on a trip through the depths of Balkan coffee bars (actually, brandy bars). People familiar with "the Balkan culture" will know what I'm talking about (and they'll also wish to take a glass and break it!) and the ones who aren't, are able to sense what I'm talking about listening to this track.

The 4th track is "Soundboy Killa". I already see my dub/dubstep friends throwing themselves around the dance floor. Indeed a "killa", a totally groovy track featuring an MC and a lot of dubby effects, catchy and somewhat wobbly basslines.

"Full metal Jacket" is the next track starting with a nice dubby beat, bassline and percussions followed by mouth organ which melts fine with reggae/dub typical chop riffs. But then suddenly the whole atmosphere of the track is changed to naughty energetic dubstep with more harsh riffs, dub sirens, MC and of course wobbly bassline. Another floor killa.

The following track "Tantrum" has a hard reggaeton influence which features Simon Fajemisin, also known as Brother Culture, a rasta MC from United Kingdom. A pretty cool track if you're into dubstep.

A delayed guitar riff opens next track "Dub missile". Another floor killer, wobbly bassline, 4x4 dub beat accompanied with occasional mouth organ and high atmo pad chords which give a nice warm feeling to the track. Wish there's more of that though.

"Mutants" is the track you've had a chance to listen to here on ChillBase. We have featured its video in Liquid Stranger's interview. Not much to say except it was written by Warrior Queen and produced by Liquid Stranger.

"Rough road" has something that I mostly miss on this album. Feeling. Although I didn't like dubstep because of its lack of pads and atmospheres which I find most important in music, this track has everything. But not through the whole piece though.

"Hexed and perplexed" features Deeyah's vocals, unavoidable wobbly bassline and an interesting melody that somewhat reminds of the eastern culture.

And now something slightly different. Mellow ambient pads and sequences, dubstep beat, deep bassline with "vocals" on the top. "Bodily Needs" indeed talks about bodily needs as far as I have figured. I find this track kinda funny because of the artist's vocal selection, but you will have to judge yourself. And folks, remember to take care of your body. :)

"Lotus" is a track you've had a chance to listen at Interchill records Facebook page. Namely, they've posted a video on October 27th. A lovely hypnotizing track with an oriental feel to it. Important thing to mention - it's not dub(step), it's a mellow chill track.

"Dew point" is the last track on the album and it features Seb Taylor on guitar again. Another lovely mellow chill track that could easily take you onto a wonderful voyage through your inner self. Perfect for blue, rainy days.

So, to sum the things up... As I wrote in the beginning of this review, this album basically doesn't belong here. It's more dubstep than chill but I've decided to write this review anyway (and that was very hard for me because, not only because this is my first review, but also because it's not chill) as Liquid Stranger is an established chill artist and I'm a fan. But that's not all. I practically hated dubstep before and this album made me give dubstep another shot. I kinda like those wobbly basslines now and I didn't find the music soulless like usual dubstep is to me.

You all probably know what to expect from Liquid stranger's production, so quality is once again undisputed. Also, Dave Blackman from Hiltongroove did a good job on mastering as much as I can hear. People from onbeyondmetamedia.com are responsible for the cover art design, which I find very cool.

I would recommend this album to everyone, in spite of your dubstep liking or disliking, although I guess it will be more popular on the dubstep scene.

I'd tend to agree. The first Dub Step I came across was Skream which I found childish due to the Nintendo samples and Digital Mystikz which I quite liked due to the more reggae influence. I still think Dub-Step is a genre where you really have to sift through the rubbish to find the gems. However, Liquid Stranger seems to bring out the best elements and fuse them with an array of world music, dub, chill and ragga. I'd also recommend the Exicision Shambala 2009 set that Liquid Stranger shared on facebook a little while back http://www.myspace.com/excision

I am not a fan of dubstep either but had a listen to Soundboy Killa few moments ago. Really good stuff. I might check the whole album.

Soundboy Killa's free download has been posted on Interchill facebook page: http://superfan2009.com/2009/1...boy-killa/

I've been talking about for some time now wanting to hear someone fuse psychedelic Ambient with Dubstep beats. Simply because Dubstep cadence lends itself to Downtempo styles, and could easily be hybridized with it.

Now as far as the direction Liquid Stranger is taking it. I think they have the right idea, but chose to go a little too much into the "Wobble" side of Dubstep. You essentially have two directions you can take it, Ambient Dubstep with some wobble in it. Or Dubstep with some ambient in it. LS chose the latter direction with this new project.

The only tracks I really felt at all stayed true to the chill style while using dubstep beats were, 'hexed and perplexed' and 'bombay dub orchestra remix'. You could however, easily hear this being done with a heavier psy influence and a nice chill morning sound.

Which artist will step into that void first?

This is such a brilliant album, easily the best one of 2009. IMO, Liquid Stranger has the most interesting electronica/dub sound up to date, and I would like to state that this is definately not a pure dubstep release, it contains so much more. From the beautiful ambient electronica in 'Dew Point', to the epic, tabla-driven 'Lotus', reggaeton bomb 'Tantrum', and steppers dub 'Soundboy Killa.' The guy is a genious for shrists sake! smilies/cheesy.gif

I give it 10/10

All these genres and subgenres. I don't care what it's called. GREAT album in any case. My boyfriend loves it too.

There's plenty of ambient dub-step. But for a psy element maybe less so I think Nagual Sound Experiment also make an interesting fusion.

NSE is trance with a breakbeat instead of 4/4 kick, didn't care for it much. Has been done plenty of times before...

Btw, have you folks heard anything about an upcoming album with Liquid Stranger on Rottun Recordings? I've heard two tunes he did with Excision which are totally wikkid, and if you go to LS myspace there are a bunch of hard dubstep tunes, but I haven't actually seen any signs of an album yet. Super exciting though, if the rumors are true.

LS said that they are finishing it up, but then it could take up to 6 months before an album is released. But this will definately not be a chill album, judging from their tunes at myspace - pretty hardcore stuff.

The Intergalactic Slapstick is amazing imo, and the production is off the charts. I admire Interchill for incorporating something new into the chillout scene.

Each to there own I guess I found NSE to be a fusion of psy-chill, hip-hop breakz, dub with a touch of drum & bass/dub-step. As for the upcoming album on Rottun he mentions that in his interview.
