Written by Martin Woods

After 3 years of live performances Warp Technique finally released their debut album “Make Animals Happy” to high acclaim in November of 2008.
Their psychedelic melting pot of dub drenched electronica was tweaked to perfection and in my opinion they created a very dj friendly release. So here I am one year later with the re-mixes to review.

Make Animals Happy (Sensient Re-Mix)

Warp Technique - Make EP
Label: Dubmission Records
Catalog#: CDDUBM016
Format: 4 x File, EP, MP3
Country: UK
Released: 14 Dec 2009
Genre: Electronic
Style: Ambient, Downtempo, Dub, Tribal

I was quite surprised to see Sensient on here as the few tracks I have heard from this highly recommend artist from down under have been in the dark progressive trance genre. Here he takes a dreamy atmospheric stance utilizing a vast array of sounds, fx and reverb to produce an excellent alternative to the original.

Nightbreak (Mislead Convoy Re-Mix)

Mislead Convoy is a side project of Pitch Black’s Michael Hodgson whose dark and haunting take on this track is very apt to the title. The track builds slowly and in all fairness doesn’t have the impact that the harsh breaks provided in the original. Although I have a feeling this version could be a grower.

Tracklist:
01.Make Animals Happy (Sensient Re-Mix)
02.Nightbreak (Mislead Convoy Re-Mix)
03.Nowhere Dub (International Observer Re-Mix)
04.Wonderland (A Bear Called Wellington Re-Mix)

Nowhere Dub (International Observer Re-Mix)
International Observer twists this away from the psychedelic and into a more traditional dub plate. There is far more emphasis on the vocal than the original and could easily slot into a standard reggae set. This is the third version of the track I’ve heard and so far I’ve liked all three.
(Nowhere Dub (re-rub) is available for free download on their Last FM profile)

Wonderland (A Bear Called Wellington Re-Mix)

A Bear Called Wellington is a new artist to me and takes a very down-tempo approach to this track. He certainly adds a trippy element to vocal fx giving the illusion of distant indistinguishable words. However, for me I found the beat to repetitive but I’m guessing that’s the idea.
