Liquid Stranger – The Steel Trap E.P.
It’s 2010 a New Year, a time for change. For many of us this year the saying probably applies more than most. However, there were some good things to come out of 2009 and with this release L.S. is reminding us that his “The Intergalactic Slapstick” album was definitely one of them.
Deep Down Below This track starts in a traditional dub-plate fashion and the lyrics don’t overpower the track. L.S. tweaks the fx to perfection with touches of dub-step but lots of traditional effects you would expect from an old skool producer like the Mad Professor. Aftershock This track leans more to the crunching bass of dub-step than the first. However, the traditional vibes are still apparent and there’s no overkill on the vocal samples. I feel this is why L.S. often appeals to fans of both genres. Full Metal Jacket (175pf Reload) Here L.S. applies far more reverb than the album track. Those who remember the 7” dub b-sides of Reggae tracks in the 70’s may agree that this is re-mixed in a similar fashion with a modern twist.
Tracklist 1. Deep Down Below 2. Aftershock 3. Full Metal Jacket (175pf Reload) 4. Rough Road (Fender Bender Mix) 5. Sincerely Yours
Rough Road (Fender Bender Mix) This track is my personal favourite on the release. The tune swings like a pendulum from a toe-tapping skank to slow paced dub that all flows quite naturally. There’s more reverb to Brother Culture’s lyrics than the album track. However, once again L.S. avoids any overkill with his application. Sincerely Yours Here LS utilises a variety of sounds from Indian classical vocals and instruments, more acoustic sounding bass, shakers and beautifully sequenced drum rolls. The final result is a pleasurable Asian chill out track suitable for those lazy moments.
